Does anyone think food and water storage is a good idea?
When asked about his personal preparations, Koppel said that he has always owned a couple of generators but that he and his wife now have a water supply and have ordered freeze-dried foods, not only for themselves but also for their children and grandchildren.
“I really want them to be able to survive this,” Koppel said. “I think there’s a real danger that many people will not.”

If this photo of one family’s food storage in Provo, Utah is indicative of your food storage, how long will Pepsi and sugar cereals sustain and nourish your family during a crisis?
In the 1800s, Brigham Young, the second president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints prophetically urged members to keep a seven-year supply of food to sustain their families in a prolonged crisis. Over the years, probably because of disobedience and addressing the needs of a growing world-wide church, that counsel has steadily changed from three years, to just three months. Still only a small percentage of Mormons store food.
My faith does not lead me to think the Lord will provide us with roast pigs, bread already buttered, etc.; he will give us the ability to raise the grain, to obtain the fruits of the earth, to make habitations, to procure a few boards to make a box, and when harvest comes, giving us the grain, it is for us to preserve it—to save the wheat until we have one, two, five, or seven years’ provisions on hand, until there is enough of the staff of life saved by the people to [provide] bread [for] themselves and those who will come here seeking for safety (DBY, 291–92).—Teachings of Brigham Young, Chapter 31: Thrift, Industry, and Self-Reliance
John Williams (ShadowStats.com) is a very respected economist who reports on government statistics using their former accounting methods—before they were corrupted. Although now the dollar is strong, he believes hyperinflation will begin this year after the dollar falls but the system can break at any time without warning.
At the end of the interview he says to hold gold and silver through the duration of the next crisis. Watch his interview:
